Anyway, I thought that I should pass on some of the wisdom that I have learnt from my university experience so far. And as with all of my advice I would like to stress the following two points:
1) University in Britain is obviously going to be different (read: better) than in America, Canada or Europe. But I believe that whilst my advice is universal, please forgive any mismatches that come from me being blessed with a superior educational system.
2) I am very tired and kinda stressed so I've undoubtedly missed some pearls of wisdom out, expect updates.
3) (I said three points right?) I'm not trying to be patronising with any advice, this is mainly just stuff that I would have found comforting/helpful when I first started.
AND JACOB SPOKE, AND HE SAW THAT IT WAS GOOD:
Be reckless, this is the best (possibly only) chance youll have to get away with it. With the perfect balance between independence and lack of responsibilities, plus being young enough to recover easily, now is the best time to do something stupid. (Obviously, in moderation
Join plenty of societies/clubs and go to each one at least once. But only keep attending at most three, or youll run out of free time.
Make yourself explore the city, it took me the best part of a month to learn my local area and it wouldnt even count as a hamlet to you Americans. XD
Make yourself talk to new people; during the first few months of uni people are surprisingly open.
EVERYONE cries at some point during their first year. Youre not alone. ^_^
Though intelligence and knowledge of the subject are important, one thing I have really learnt from uni is that what your end results truly depend on is effort. Dont slack off or youll end up like me.
Cooking is a chore at first, but make sure you eat at least breakfast and one good meal a day. One technique I had was to start on microwave meals to minimise work and just to make sure I ate something. Now I cook most of my meals.
Your uni will have a library, get to know it now!
Seriously, now!
If you arent already, try communal living at least once.
Dont be afraid to ask questions in lectures, the chances are at least one other person is stuck and also worried about looking stupid, if not, who cares? If you dont get it dont let nerves hold you back.
Keep in contact with your parents. Youre independent, not orphaned. And youd be surprised at how you never outgrow parental advice.
The two obvious ones:
Be yourself.
Have fun!
Dont let anything distract you from the reason that youre at university in the first place.
Even though your degree will most likely be the end of your formal education, dont feel pressured to select a career path.
Dont let your lectures be the limit of your learning experience; uni is also a great time to get a new hobby. Also a great time to meet new people attached to your hobbies.
And remember that you're all experiencing the same things right now. If it feels like too much talk to each other about it, or me if everyone's offline.
